The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recently announced it has more than $244 million in grant funding available through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program.
Funding is for projects that increase rail reliability, efficiency, or transportation safety. Passenger and freight projects are eligible that improve intercity passenger rail capital assets, relocate rail lines, upgrade highway-rail grade crossings, deploy railroad safety technology, upgrade short-line railroad infrastructure, and address congestion challenges.
Many factors also will be taken into consideration, including using innovative approaches to improve safety and expediting project delivery and enhancing economic vitality.
The FRA will give preference to projects where the federal share of total costs would not exceed 50 percent.
“The Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements grant program is an important resource for railroads to upgrade infrastructure and for communities to enhance safety on tracks and at railroad crossings,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao said.
At least a quarter of funds have been reserved for projects in rural communities.
Applications are due in 60 days.
FRA will offer eligible applicants web-based training and technical assistance Sept. 4.
FRA has held webinars and debriefings with more than 80 stakeholders since fiscal year 2017.
