“Detroit Three” automakers do not make Greenest vehicles list

Fiat Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors did not appear on the GreenerCars ratings list by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) for the first time in five years.

The ratings include most vehicles from model year 2019, but the partial government shutdown has delayed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from certifying some models, and ACEEE could not review those models. Certification is mandatory before automakers can sell vehicles.

“Vehicles with some form of electrification, whether hybrid or battery electric, continue to take every spot on the Greenest List,” Eric Junga, ACEEE senior transportation research analyst, said. “Despite a few automakers’ cutting back on their car fleets to focus on crossovers and SUVs, the Greenest List shows that many consumers have a range of good eco-friendly options.”

More than 1,200 vehicles were scored on an environmental damage index that examines fuel emissions and fuel economy. The ACEEE uses information from the EPA and the California Air Resources Board.

The 10 greenest vehicles were manufactured by Hyundai, BMW, Honda, Kia, Nissan, Volkswagen, and Toyota.

The least environmentally friendly vehicles made ACEEE’s Meanest List. Most were trucks, SUVs and luxury vehicles. The 10 “meanest” were manufactured by Jeep, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Dodge, Land Rover, and Nissan.
