Nine states’ departments of transportation recently were awarded $8.4 million in Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) Demonstration awards.
The departments are in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Utah. Funds will be used for projects that improve the safety and operational efficiency of bridges and roads and use connected-vehicle technology, and cutting-edge pavement materials or engineering techniques. The projects follow federal regulations and policies.
The AID program works closely with FHWA’s On-Ramp to Innovation Every Day Counts program.
“These states are leading the way in implementing innovative solutions to improve safety and mobility on America’s roadways,” Brandye L. Hendrickson, deputy federal highway administrator, said. “Their creative approaches to delivering better quality and more cost-effective solutions in roadbuilding and operations are sure to inspire other states in using such methods.”
The New Jersey Department of Transportation was awarded $322,462, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation/Town of East Kingston was awarded $631,925, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation/City of Dover was awarded $649,500, and the Illinois Department of Transportation/Williamson County was awarded $771,690.
The remaining departments of transportation were each awarded $1 million.
Since 2014, the AID Demonstration program has awarded more than $60 million.
