The Arizona State Transportation Board recently approved funding for projects to improve several state routes that move goods and produce to and from Mexico.
Projects include expanding Interstate 17 and US 93, along with State Route 260, and State Route 189. The majority of the projects are in Maricopa and Pima counties.
“ADOT’s mission is to provide reliable infrastructure to help move people, goods and services, generate commerce and economic activity, and connect major freight and travel corridors,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said. “This annual process of delivering key projects is a careful balance between assessing priorities and working within our funding constraints.”
The projects are part of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) Five-Year Transportation Facilities Construction Program. The plan was approved by the transportation board following three public hearings and public comments.
Also included in the plan is providing at least $260 million annually for the preservation of bridges and highways throughout the state.
Preservation includes extending the life cycle of existing pavement, repairing or reconstructing bridges, filling potholes, and repaving highways.
As part of the Long-Range Transportation Plan, ADOT proposes increasing the amount of preservation funding to $320 million annually during the next six to 10 years.
