The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently announced the recipients of $264.5 million in grants through the Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program.
The program enhances the mobility of transit riders while improving bus systems safety and reliability. The funds are used to rehabilitate or replace buses; to purchase, rehabilitate or construct buildings for bus storage and maintenance; and to purchase related equipment.
The program is funded through the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act.
“FTA is proud to help bring new and rehabilitated buses, facilities, and equipment to communities across the country,” K. Jane Williams, FTA acting administrator, said. “This marks a step forward in improving mobility for the millions of Americans who travel by bus to work, school, healthcare, and other services.”
A total of 453 projects were eligible for fiscal year 2017 grants. They were awarded to 139 agencies in every state as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Grants range from $68,000 to $6 million with an average grant of $3.6 million.
The largest grant was awarded to the Tennessee Department of Transportation to assist transit authorities throughout the state purchase newer vehicles.
The smallest grant was given to the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities for the purchase of transit vans.
