Ray Martinez was confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday as director of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
He is the former chairman and chief administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. He also formerly served as commissioner for the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and as chairman of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
Martinez supports the Electronic Logging Devices mandate but said during his confirmation hearing that he is open to meeting with small, independent truck drivers who are opposed to the mandate.
American Trucking Associations (ATA) supports the confirmation.
“There are many issues facing our industry – from implementation of the electronic logging device rule to needed reforms to CSA, the hours-of-service rules and much more,” ATA Chairman Dave Manning said. “From his work in New York and New Jersey, we trust Ray to be fair and safety-conscious in this new role as head of FMCSA. On behalf of ATA, I want to congratulate him on his confirmation and say we look forward being a partner with him and his agency to improve highway safety.”
CSA, an acronym for compliance, safety, accountability, is an FMCSA program that holds drivers and motor carriers accountable for safety.
