The Port of New Orleans moved 1.15 million cruise passengers at its Erato Street and Julia Street Cruise Terminals in 2017, setting a new record and marking the fourth consecutive year of more than 1 million passengers.

Cruise lines are adding newer ships with higher passenger capacities to the port to keep up with demand. Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International will add new ships this year while Carnival Cruise Line will replace three ships in 2019. American Cruise Lines will add river cruise vessels this year.

“These year-end results validate the continued appeal of cruising from the Crescent City and reflect our commitment to excellence,” Brandy D. Christian, Port of New Orleans president and CEO, said. “We expect additional growth in 2018 and will continue to provide high-level service that complements New Orleans’ natural hospitality and vibrant energy. We hold ourselves to high standards and work to exceed expectations.”

The port, the nation’s sixth largest, is vital to the local economy, supporting 8,321 jobs.

The majority of cruise guests (80 percent) are from out of state and 60 percent spend an average of two days in New Orleans. This generates more than $15 million in hotel revenue annually.
