The three Port Authority of New York and New Jersey airports had nearly 63.6 million passengers during the first half of the year, a 2.4 percent increase from 2016 and putting the airports on pace to set a fifth consecutive record.
Air-cargo volume also increased by 7 percent, reflecting the most growth since 2010.
“The Port Authority’s airport system is one of the region’s greatest economic engines and the latest passenger records are a testament to the foresight of our commitment to modernizing these facilities,’’ Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said. “We owe our record-level fliers both 21st century amenities and first-rate customer service, and we are in the process of ensuring these goals are fulfilled by leveraging both private and public investment in this critical infrastructure.”
During the first six months of 2017, Newark Liberty International saw a 7.2 percent increase in passenger volume, serving 20.9 million passengers, and a 7.3 percent increase in air cargo.
John F. Kennedy International Airport’s volume grew 1.4 percent with more than 28.5 million passengers while cargo jumped 6.7 percent.
Stewart International Airport’s volume spiked almost 10 percent and cargo increased 15.7 percent.
LaGuardia Airport had approximately 14 million passengers, the second highest first-half-year volume.
The Port Authority is investing $11.6 billion by 2026 to modernizing the airports.
