The Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida was filled with truckers this week competing for the title of champion in the 80th Annual National Truck Driving and Step Van Driving Championships.
Hosted by the American Trucking Association (ATA), the championship over four days dedicated to three factors: industry knowledge, safe driving and thoroughness of pre-trip inspections. It is meant to highlight safety among competing companies, of which 97 had representatives.
“Truck drivers move the goods that we depend on for comfortable and productive lives, but are rarely celebrated for their skill and commitment to safety,” Kevin Burch, ATA chairman and president of Jet Express Inc., said. “This competition puts drivers in the spotlight and brings attention to their daily excellence.”
Written exams, vehicle inspections and a driving skills test on an obstacle course are all part of the program. When not in the hot seat, though, attendees also had an Exhibit Hall to wander, truck driving simulators to play around with and network. Awards will be handed out Saturday.
