The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently awarded $527.8 million in airport infrastructure grants to 584 airports as part of the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP).
Each year, the AIP provides funding to airports based on passenger volume. The FAA can supplement entitlements with discretionary funding if an airport’s project needs exceed its entitlement funds.
The program funds airport signage, lighting, markings, runways, taxiways, and other airport infrastructure projects.
“Investing in our airport infrastructure ensures the safe and efficient operation of our air transportation system,” FAA Administrator Michael P. Huerta said. “This funding program helps us maintain, renovate, and build airport infrastructure at airports.”
This year, 38 airports will be provided with discretionary funding.
The three largest projects:
Chicago O’Hare International was awarded $60 million for the construction phase of Runway 9C/27C and for reimbursement of the construction of Runway 10C/28C. Runway 9C/27C is scheduled for commission in 2020, while Runway 10C/28C was commissioned in 2013.
Asheville Regional Airport was awarded $18.2 million for the seventh phase of its small hub airport project. During this phase of the project, Runway 17/35 will be relocated and rebuilt to meet FAA design standards.
Pullman/Moscow Regional Airport was awarded $16 million for the fourth phase of its project to rebuild Runway 6/24 to meet FAA design standards.
