The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans to deploy a new Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) service this year, earlier than planned.
NOTAMs communicate temporary airspace changes to pilots and flight planners. These changes include airspace restrictions and obstructions, and runway closures. Annually more than 4 million NOTAMs are issued.
“The Notice to Airmen system is deeply outdated and showing serious cracks,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said. “Over the last few years, we’ve seen multiple system outages ground regional air travel, create extensive delays, and otherwise ruin the flying experience for the American people. It’s time our technology enters the 21st Century. NOTAM modernization is the first step as we work to deliver an all-new air traffic control system that makes air travel safer and more efficient.”
The modernized NOTAM will enable efficient dataflows and better stakeholder collaboration, provide near-real-time data exchange, be scalable with resilient architecture, and be hosted securely in the cloud.
The FAA used a vendor challenge and selected CGI Federal to work on the modernization and to deploy the service. CGI is on an accelerated schedule and will deliver the NOTAM Modernization Service by July. The FAA is hoping to have the service operational by September.
