
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently released figures for January activity.
The Port Authority’s commercial airports, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty and JFK, recorded the busiest January on record. Approximately 10.7 million passengers used the airports, more than 180,000 passengers higher than the previous record set in 2020. Both domestic and international travel were 3.5 percent higher than January 2024.
The PATH commuter rail system served 4.5 million passengers in January 2025, 11 percent higher than January 2024 and 70 percent of its January 2019 levels. Ridership averaged 178,195 passengers on weekdays, up 10 percent from 2024, while weekend ridership averaged 91,540 passengers on Saturdays and 64,768 passengers on Sundays.
The agency’s six vehicular crossings served approximately 9.2 million eastbound vehicles in January, 0.6 percent lower than January 2024 and 0.2 percent lower than pre-pandemic January 2019 levels.
The Port of New York and New Jersey moved 720,747 twenty-foot equivalent units in January, the third busiest January on record and the busiest start to a year since the pandemic cargo surge. In addition, the figure was 8 percent higher than January 2024’s total and 16 percent higher than pre-pandemic January 2019. Volumes increased 5 percent between December 2024 to January 2025.
