The Alabama Port Authority recently broke ground on the $94 million Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF), a facility located on 272 acres that will provide seamless rail and truck connectivity between central Alabama and the Port of Mobile.

“The Montgomery ICTF is a game-changer for freight movement in Alabama and beyond,” John Driscoll, Alabama Port Authority director and CEO, said. “This facility will provide businesses with seamless access to global markets, driving economic growth and strengthening our state’s supply chain infrastructure.”

The facility will have direct access to Interstate 85 and U.S. Highway 31 and will have a throughput capacity equal to 30,000 shipping containers. It will operate five days a week and offer express daily service from the Port of Mobile to Montgomery’s automotive and manufacturing hub.

Cargo volume at the port has increased following the deepening of Mobile Harbor, and the facility will provide environmental benefits by relieving stress on the interstate system.

CSX, a key project partner, will serve the facility which is expected to begin operation by 2027.

The project is expected to have a large economic impact on the region. Since the project was announced in 2022, private companies have invested more than $3 billion in the area surrounding the facility.
