New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced airports across his state will receive nearly $7 million in grants to fund improvements.

The 12 grants totaling $6.7 million will support projects at 11 airports in 9 counties, he said. The funding comes from New Jersey Department of Transportation Trust Fund and the Airport Safety Fund. State funds will cover 90 percent of the eligible costs for each project, while the airport owner covers the remaining 10 percent, Murphy’s office said.

“Airport Improvement Program grants provide funding to make safety improvements at New Jersey’s public-use airports and ensure they are well maintained,” NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor said. “General aviation airports serve as key economic engines for local communities by providing transportation opportunities for businesses, residents, and visitors.”

The grants were awarded through a competitive process, Murphy’s office said, with an emphasis on projects that were designed to enhance safety, remove obstructions rehabilitate existing facilities and equipment, and make capital improvements. Projects receiving funds this year include an airport master plan development, a taxiway design and construction, lighting improvements, transient apron design and construction, and safety improvements.

Grants included $586,000 to the Woodbine Airport Taxiway D relocation project in Cape May County, $189,935 for the Morristown Airport’s LED light and sign upgrade project in Morristown County, and $1 million for the Monmouth Executive Airport Partial Runway project in Monmouth County.
