The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is aiming to improve mobility and road safety near North Carolina State University in Raleigh as part of a multimodal connected vehicle pilot project.

The pilot, funded by a $2 million grant from the Advanced Transportation Technologies and Innovative Mobility Development program, uses connected vehicle technology to enhance the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit riders. The technology also will create a connected environment that uses real-time data to improve transportation efficiency.

Project partners developed a mobile app, called YU2X, to keep road users informed and safe by providing alerts and information on pedestrian warnings, speed advisories, current traffic signal phases, and other road conditions. The app can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play.

Traffic signal controllers were replaced along key roads with additional hardware installed at 27 intersections to enable the system to communicate. The goal is to improve safe navigation through the upgraded intersections.

NCDOT representatives held a virtual meeting on Tuesday for the public to learn about the Multimodal Connected Vehicle Pilot, with another meeting scheduled for Thursday.
