The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) recently completed the $23 million Crescent City Connection Decorative Lighting Project.

The project, a joint effort between DOTD and the city of New Orleans, installed 1,660 LED lights that replaced lights installed in 1987. The lights caused electrical surges that shorted out bulbs and damaged the electrical grid on the trusses.

The new lights extend across the Mississippi River and reflect off the water and can change color. The lights illuminate both twin cantilever bridges either separately or in unison. Pre-programmed lighting scenes include themes for various holidays.

“The CCC Decorative Lighting Project is a powerful blend of culture and innovation, designed to showcase the very best of New Orleans,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said. “This is another step forward in ensuring our city continues to shine as a world-class destination, reflecting the spirit and pride of our community.”

New Orleans-based Frischhertz Electric installed the new lighting system, and the regional offices of Modjeski and Masters designed the programmable LED lighting.

The project was completed in seven months, 17 months ahead of schedule, and entered operation in autumn 2024. This month DOTD officially handed over control of the system to New Orleans and Cantrell.
