The Pennsylvania State Transportation Commission recently approved 30 rail freight improvement projects in Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 9, totaling $55 million, that will enhance freight mobility.
Projects will be funded through the Rail Transportation Assistance Program and the Rail Freight Assistance Program.
“Expanding and improving Pennsylvania’s rail freight network will support family-sustaining jobs and connect Pennsylvania communities to the global economy while bolstering local economic development,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. “These investments will create opportunities for generations of Pennsylvanians to come and will provide key mobility across the Commonwealth.”
Projects include:
CSX Transportation was awarded $13.1 million to rehabilitate and improve the condition of the 25th Street Viaduct in Philadelphia County.
Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway was awarded $5.8 million to rehabilitate six bridges.
NorthPoint Development was awarded $3.8 million to expand the Kinder Morgan terminal rail yard and improve the rail infrastructure.
Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad was awarded $2.9 million to rehabilitate track on the Laurel Subdivision.
RJ Corman Railroad Company Pennsylvania Lines was awarded $2.9 million to replace 43,930 linear feet of rail on the Cresson and Cherry Tree divisions.
Union Railroad was awarded $2.6 million for upgrades to the High Grade Bridge.
Pennsylvania has 65 operating railroads.
