The Texas Department of Transportation announced it developed a plan to use artificial intelligence to make Texas roads safer.

The Artificial Intelligence Strategic Plan, TxDOT said, identifies how it can best use AI to enhance processes, policies and management of its transportation investments. The three year plan identifies use cases and provides recommendations to prepare the department of innovations it says will reshape its operations.

“TxDOT is committed to staying at the forefront of technological advancements, and AI offers tremendous potential to improve safety and streamline operations,” TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said. “By utilizing AI in a secure and responsible manner, we are revolutionizing the way we monitor and manage traffic, detect incidents in real time and streamline how we work to help get projects delivered more efficiently.”

The department said there are 230 potential AI-use cases in the plan created by TxDOT engineers, IT experts, planners and other state employees, that will guide the department through 2027. The plan also lays out how to enhance data quality and train employees on AI.

“These initiatives are a testament to our commitment to innovation and safety,” TxDOT Director of Strategy and Innovation Darran Anderson said. “By embracing AI and other advanced technologies, we are improving the efficiency of our operations while making Texas’ transportation system safer and more resilient.”

The plan focuses on optimizing infrastructure, using data in decision making, enhancing stakeholder experiences, unlocking workforce potential and ensuring security. Officials said an AI Implementation Roadmap within the Strategic Plan provides an approach to adopting AI responsibly, and adhering to high ethical, security and data privacy standards.
