Calgary-based Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), a transnational railway, and ATCO EnPower, a division of Canadian Utilities Ltd., recently finished the construction of hydrogen production and refueling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton.

The facilities, both of which are not fully operational, include electrolyzer, compression, storage, and dispensing systems for locomotive refueling. Calgary’s electrolyzer is powered in part by a solar power facility co-located at CPKC’s headquarters.

“We are proud to announce the completion of the two-hydrogen production and refueling stations for CPKC,” Mark Brown, ATCO EnPower, executive vice president of projects and operations, said. “This advancement marks significant progress in utilizing hydrogen as a fuel source for commercial transportation and reflects ATCO EnPower’s commitment to building a sustainable future by providing innovative energy solutions for our customers.”

CPKC is retrofitting several diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells and hopes to create a model for clean fuel for the rail industry. The company operates a single-line railway linking Canada, the United States and Mexico that stretches approximately 20,000 route miles. It employs 20,000 people.

ATCO EnPower provided engineering, procurement and construction services during construction and will operate the facilities. It provides customers with alternative fuel, renewables, energy storage, and industrial water energy solutions.
