The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Board of Commissioners recently approved $35 million in additional funding for the redevelopment of Terminal B at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
The board previously approved $20 million in October 2019.
“With the EWR Vision Plan in place, we are wasting no time getting the ball rolling on the planning for a new world-class Terminal B,” Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said. “This funding will allow us to start initial planning work on a new modern Terminal B, including developing a funding strategy, and explore how it fits into the larger redevelopment of Newark Liberty that aims to elevate this airport into one of the best in the world.”
The additional funding will launch the planning process. This includes preliminary planning and assessment work on the needs of the new terminal, assessing related utility and infrastructure needs, determining feasible financing strategies, and beginning outreach efforts.
The new Terminal B replaces a building constructed in 1973 that was designed to serve approximately 6.8 million passengers annually. It is well past capacity, handling approximately 12.3 million passengers in 2023.
Design firm Arup and architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill developed the EWR Vision Plan.
