U.S. Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND) on Wednesday joined elected officials to celebrate the completion of the reconstruction and extension of a crosswind runway at the Grand Forks International Airport in North Dakota.
The runway work was part of a five-year, $70 million project at the airport, which will allow it to maintain operations while preparing the airport for reconstruction of its primary runway. The main runway reconstruction effort is expected to begin in 2026 and will support greater air traffic capacity and improved operational efficiency.
Hoeven, a member of the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Committee, said he worked to secure $50 million in federal funding for the project.
“Between the dynamic and growing economy in the Grand Forks region and the world-leading aviation school at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks has one of the top 25 busiest airports in the country,” Hoeven said. “We clearly need airport infrastructure with the ability to meet air service demand now and into the future.”
The airport also expects to begin construction of a new air traffic control tower in 2025, which Hoeven said he has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration to advance and have fully funded by the federal government.
