The U.S. Department of Transportation recently opened the application period for the third round of the Reconnecting Communities Pilot (RCP) Program.

This round of funding is for more than $600 million and is available for capital construction and community planning grants.

“Through President (Joe) Biden’s infrastructure law, we’re addressing infrastructure choices of the past and making sure that our transportation investments serve to connect, rather than divide, people and communities across the country,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “This funding will support projects that bring people closer to jobs, schools, housing, places of worship, and one another.”

Communities interested in the program can request free technical assistance to explore project feasibility in their communities.

The application deadline is Sept. 30.

The RCP program is part of the Justice40 Initiative, which has the goal of awarding 40 percent of certain federal investments to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution.

As part of Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the RCP and the Neighborhood Access and Equity (NAE) program were combined last year.

The Investing in America agenda has awarded $3.3 billion to support projects in 130 communities that revitalize and reconnect areas cut off by past transportation infrastructure decisions.
