The New York State Department of Transportation soon will begin work on a $11.4 million project to reconfigure the intersection of State Route 376 (also known as Raymond Avenue/New Hackensack Road) and Hooker Avenue in Poughkeepsie.

The project will create a single-lane roundabout that will enhance safety and improve traffic flow. The roundabout was designed to reduce potential conflict points that motorists and pedestrians encounter and create fewer backups.

Work will include landscaping, crosswalks, sidewalks and other pedestrian accommodations.

“At DOT our focus is on the people and communities we serve, and this project exemplifies that philosophy with a focus on infrastructure solutions that employ complete streets principles that serve the community,” State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said. “Transforming this busy Dutchess County intersection into a roundabout will reduce congestion while enhancing safety and improving access for all users of the transportation system.”

The project is part of the department’s Complete Streets initiative. Complete Streets projects consider the needs of bicyclists, children, the elderly, motorists, pedestrians, persons with disabilities, and public transportation riders.

Roundabouts are engineered to maximize safety and minimize congestion.

Field preparation, survey and utility work already is underway. Construction will begin later this year and will be completed in stages.
