The U.S. Department of Transportation recently award California, Oregon and Washington a $12 million Infrastructure for Rebuilding America program grant to provide truck drivers with real-time truck parking availability information.

“Our success with this grant is due to the strong partnership among the west coast states,” Amy Ramsdell, Oregon Department of Transportation Commerce and Compliance Division administrator, said.

The project will deploy a regional truck parking information management system at approximately 54 truck parking facilities along the I-5 corridor. The information will allow truck drivers to make decisions about where to stop for required rest breaks and overnight parking.

“Transportation departments in Washington, Oregon and California collaborated on this project to bring truck drivers the real-time information they have long sought on truck parking availability,” Washington’s Secretary of Transportation Roger Millar said. “Rather than guessing on what parking might be available up ahead and spending precious time seeking safe locations to park for mandated rest periods, truck drivers will soon be able to make informed plans using real-time information. Keeping truck drivers safe and productive is a win for all of us.”

Drivers will be able to access parking information via dynamic parking availability signs, an in-cab system, an application program interface, and a website/mobile application.
