First standards set for aircraft electronics technicians

ASTM International has issued its first standards for the certification of Aircraft Electronics Technicians.

The guidelines, issued by the organization’s Committee on Aerospace Personnel, establishes standards for testing and evaluating skills in a variety of areas including safety and tools.

The Standard Guide for Aircraft Electronics Technician Personal Certification is intended to be used as a study guide for those seeking certification.

“This guide is the starting point for maintenance organizations, manufacturers, airlines, training providers, educational institutions, and others involved in certifying or hiring skilled technicians who maintain aircraft and their electrical and electronic systems,” Mike Adamson, ASTM member and Aircraft Electronics Association vice president of member programs and education, said. “This industry consensus standard is the first of many that will support a more uniform approach to training and education in a field where demand for high-tech talent is growing.”

The committee has plans to establish standards for certification in nine other areas including soft skills, airframe and systems, and configuring and troubleshooting IT networks and satellite communications systems.

All standards would support endorsements and certifications from the National Center for Aerospace and Transportation Technologies.

ASTM members will meet July 27 and 28 in Boston, Massachusetts to establish the standards.

ASTM has 30,000 members worldwide and has established 12,000 industry standards.
