Fifteen sites throughout Utah have received funding through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, doubling the state’s current fast charging capacity by the end of 2024.
The NEVI program is designed to build out states’ electric vehicle charging networks.
“The future is coming, and these 15 new fast charging sites will ensure Utah will be ready for it,” Carlos Braceras, Utah Department of Transportation executive director, said. “Building out the statewide charging network really opens the door to let Utahns choose to travel where they want, when they want, in the way they want.”
The chargers, which will be owned and operated by private companies, will provide around-the-clock availability to the public along US-6 and US-191.
The number of electric vehicles Utah has been growing at average of 48 percent year over year since 2015.
The NEVI program will provide approximately $36 million in funding. This will be combined with a minimum 20 percent private sector match.
During the first phase of the program, approximately $17.5 million will be invested to install fast EV chargers every 50 miles along Utah’s interstate highways.
The department entered into public-private partnerships to rollout the project and no tax dollars were used.
