The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) recently awarded five Wisconsin communities $985,718 in Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program grants.

The program helps communities identify solutions to improve road safety in their area.

“We applaud commitment to help make roads safer and save lives in Wisconsin through this grant program,” Craig Thompson, Wisconsin Department of Transportation secretary, said. “These federal discretionary grants can make a real difference in our state and we encourage Wisconsin communities to continue to apply for them.”

The communities receiving funding are:

The City of Beloit received $400,400 to develop a SS4A action plan and to pilot temporary bike lanes.

The Milwaukee County Department of Transportation received $219,918 to pilot street safety upgrades and carry out studies to inform upcoming action plans. Upgrades include high visibility crosswalks and portable speed bumps.

The City of La Crosse received $160,000 to develop a safety action plan to prioritize projects that will create safer and more equitable streets.

The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians received $105,000 to create a comprehensive safety action plan for tribal roads.

The Oneida Nation received $100,400 to prepare a plan to apply for an implementation grant.

Funding is through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
