Siemens Mobility, a passenger rolling stock manufacturer, plans to construct a $220 million advanced manufacturing and rail services facility in Lexington, N.C.
The selected site will be a passenger coach manufacturing factory, and a passenger coach overhauls facility located on 200 acres. There is room for future expansion. The location will be a carbon-neutral facility and will incorporate technologies such as 3D printing, robotic welding, and Virtual Reality welder training.
“This latest facility will build rail technology to help transform the everyday for millions of passengers around the country, particularly as the country sees a resurgence in public transit and intercity travel,” Dr. Roland Busch, Siemens AG CEO, said.
It is expected to begin operations in 2024 and will help the company fulfill a growing demand for passenger rail in North America.
The facility will create more than 500 jobs, and North Carolina estimates it will grow the state’s economy by $1.6 billion over the course of 12 years.
Lexington has easy access to transportation and will be the company’s ninth manufacturing site.
Lexington’s sister site will be the company’s Sacramento rolling stock facility.
Siemens Mobility is a separately managed company of Siemens AG.
Over the past two decades, Siemens has invested $40 billion in the United States. It employs 45,000 employees at 21 manufacturing sites.
