The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program will award $16.6 million over the next five years to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to deploy its plan to expand the district’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Funding includes $2.4 million for fiscal year 2022.
The federal NEVI program focuses on building electric vehicle charging infrastructure along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). There are AFCs within the district.
“These very important federal dollars will help us keep up with the demands of a modernized transportation network where electric vehicle stations are amply available and conveniently assessable to those in all eight wards of our District, as more and more electric vehicles span our region’s roadways,” DDOT Director Everett Lott said.
DDOT held approximately 30 meetings with external stakeholders and District agencies to develop its NEVI plan.
Funding will be used for the installation of on-site electrical service equipment, upgrading existing and constructing new DC fast charging infrastructure, EV charging station signage, mapping analyses, data sharing, community and stakeholder engagement, and other projects directly related to charging electric vehicles.
DDOT’s NEVI plan integrates the national Justice40 goal which states at least 40 percent of federal investments are allocated to Disadvantaged Communities.
