The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) recently broke ground on a $74.8 million project to improve the East Haddam Swing Bridge, which spans the Connecticut River on Route 82.
The project will address the structural, mechanical, and electrical components of the 110-year-old swing bridge and will improve swing-span operation reliability and extend service life. Work includes substructure repairs, improved sidewalk access, roof replacement, isolated deck replacements, and new mechanical and electrical systems.
“The Swing Bridge is 110 years old, and this is its first major rehabilitation,” CTDOT Commissioner Joe Giulietti said. “The steel will be strengthened, the mechanicals will be replaced and upgraded, and a new sidewalk will be built, increasing pedestrian and bicycle safety. We continue working closely with Haddam, East Haddam, the local Chamber of Commerce and area businesses to minimize disruptions and share information.”
Giulietti attended the groundbreaking ceremony with state Rep. Christine Palm (D- Middlesex County), East Haddam First Selectman Irene Haines, and Haddam First Selectman Robert McGarry.
The event was held at Eagles Landing State Park.
Work will begin soon and end in the spring of 2025. The Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 2 in Norwich will oversee the project. The American Bridge Co. is the contractor.
