New York’s LaGuardia Airport recently opened its Terminal C outer roadway system six months ahead of schedule.
The roadway is part of a larger $8 billion project to update the airport. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey allotted $625 million to the outer roadway.
The outer roadway network is approximately one mile, and work included upper and lower level roads in front of the new Terminal C and two new bridges.
“The completion of LaGuardia Airport’s outer roadway network demonstrates our commitment to improving the travel experience for passengers at LaGuardia Airport, who will be able to move more efficiently around the airport on thoughtfully designed roads with fewer traffic lights and wider lanes that will reduce traffic delays,” Kevin O’Toole, port authority chairman, said. “Easier movement around the airport is an integral part of our mission to create a world-class experience for travelers.”
Before the modernization project began, there were 19 traffic signals at Terminals B, C, and D. After the project, there will be three. In addition, 26 bridges and flyovers will replace 15 existing bridges, and most on-airport road crossings will be eliminated.
A total of 7.7 miles of airport roadway will be lengthened to 8.4 miles and will feature wider lanes.
