The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) recently launched a statewide campaign to repair potholes.

“NJDOT crews work year-round to repair potholes and keep our highways in good condition, but at this time of year, it becomes our primary focus, especially after the winter that we have had,” Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti said. “We are beginning the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s annual pothole campaign today and will continue for the next couple of months until we have repaired the most significant potholes from this winter.”

NJDOT will instruct crews to close travel lanes whenever necessary during daytime hours to fix potholes efficiently and aggressively. Most work will be limited to between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and crews will avoid working during peak travel times when possible.

This is the busiest time of year for pothole repair.

When temperatures are warm enough, road crews will perform permanent patching work on more problematic roads. This work is more extensive and is generally conducted overnight.

The statewide campaign occurs annually. During fiscal years 2016 through 2020, NJDOT repaired 195,965 potholes on average per year. During fiscal year 2021, NJDOT repaired approximately 90,639 potholes.

The fiscal year runs from July 1 to March 1.
