Over $97 million in grants will be distributed to states, local communities, tribal entities, universities, and non-profit organizations via the Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).
The funding allotment would support state pipeline and hazardous materials safety programs such as first responder training, educating the public on local safety initiatives, and encouraging new pipeline development technologies.
“The grants issued today continue to be an essential part of PHMSA’s commitment to protecting Americans,” PHMSA Administrator Skip Elliott said. “These grants will help states and communities develop specific solutions to meet their individual safety needs regarding hazardous materials and pipeline safety challenges.”
Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao said the allocation funds important training and educational programs while advancing pipeline technology.
Pipeline Safety awards include $5.4 million in Underground Natural Gas Storage, $2 million in Competitive Academic Agreement Program awards, $1.25 million in State Damage Prevention Program grants, and $1.2 million in Technical Assistance grants.
Additionally, Hazardous Materials Safety grants include $3.4 million in Hazardous Materials Instructor Training, $941,000 in Supplemental Public Sector Training, and $750,000 in Community Safety funding.
Officials noted $20 million has been earmarked for Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) grants in each state, five U.S. territories, and three federally recognized Tribes and Tribal organizations.
