Amtrak announced this week that it is preparing for the first of its new diesel-electric locomotives as part of long-term planned improvements for fleet, infrastructure, and stations.
Amtrak developed the ALC-42 series with Siemens Mobility, equipping it with the latest safety systems that include Positive Train Control and Crash Energy Management.
Amtrak detailed specifics of the initial order outlining the purchase of 75 new locomotives in December 2018, noting deliveries are expected through 2024.
The ALC-42 also features Alternating Current Propulsion for a maximum speed of 125 mph, and a 16-cylinder Cummins QSK95 engine with Tier 4 Emissions Technology to reduce nitrogen oxide by more than 89 percent and particulate matter by 95 percent.
Amtrak maintains the locomotives provide diesel fuel consumption saving while aiding the carrier in attaining sustainability goals, adding the ALC-42 locomotives would replace Amtrak P40 and P42 diesel-electric locomotives, indicating while modern when integrated into the carrier’s fleet in the 90s, the P-series locomotives have experienced extensive use for more than 25 years, lack current technology and do not achieve Tier 4 emissions standards.
Amtrak is purchasing the new locomotives through available funds, and the effort fulfills Buy American provisions.
