The American Association of State Highway and Transportation (AASHTO) is lauding the Alliance for Automotive Innovation’s commitment to utilizing the 5.9 gigahertz (GHz) wireless communication band or safety spectrum.
AASHTO officials said the Alliance’s efforts imploring the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to refrain from permitting unlicensed devices would save countless lives.
The Alliance recently forwarded correspondence to the FCC requesting using the entire 5.9 gigahertz (GHz) wireless communication band to advance the use of connected vehicle technologies.
“Auto Innovators’ pledge to install millions of connected vehicle radios in new passenger vehicles is a giant leap forward in the ongoing effort to improve highway safety,” Jim Tymon, AASHTO’s executive director, said. “This commitment complements the work being done by state departments of transportation to research and implement the roadside technology needed to connect those radios to the infrastructure around them. This connectivity holds the promise of saving countless lives by providing real-time information to drivers about road and weather conditions.”
AASHTO officials said the Alliance for Automotive Innovation’s commitment should serve to dispel any notion that the transportation industry will not use the entire 5.9 GHz spectrum for the safety and mobility purposes for which it was intended.
