Phase one of the L Project tunnel rehabilitation is complete ahead of schedule and on budget, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced.
The subway tunnel runs between Manhattan and Brooklyn and remained open for 90 percent of passengers during construction.
Work began in April to repair damage from Superstorm Sandy. Phase one repaired the first tube.
Repairs included the installation of a new cable racking system and new fire-resistant cables, 6,305 feet of track, 7,000 feet of specialized hydro- and geo-sensing fiber optic cables, and walls comprised of industrial fiber-reinforced polymer. The pumping system was upgraded and approximately 3,415 linear feet of discharge pipe was installed.
Work on the second tunnel began Monday. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has expanded bus and subway service on weeknights and weekends and is offering free subway transfers between Livonia St L and Junius St 3, and from Broadway G to Hewes St JM or Lorimer St JM during construction.
New elevators, a new escalator, and three new substations are also under construction and are expected to be completed by November 2020.
The Canarsie Tunnel Rehabilitation project is expected to be completed in April, three months ahead of the original 15- to 18-month projected timeframe.
