The Raleigh-Charlotte rail system of North Carolina will benefit from $76,888,000 million in grant funding recently announced by the Federal Railroad Administration.

Specifically, this money will go to the purchase of 13 new passenger rail coaches for their Piedmont line, which runs between the two cities, and to two capital improvements for Charlotte’s Locomotive and Railcar Maintenance facility. All of this is part of the Piedmont Intercity Fleet and Infrastructure Investments Project being run by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

“Together, we must make the case for a transportation policy that combines smart public investment with cooperation from all levels of government and, when appropriate, the private sector, to support multiple modes of transportation that are convenient, safe, and reliable,” said U.S. Rep. David Price (D-NC), chairman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, who announced the funds.

Price has pushed for the funds as part of a larger prioritization of funding for rail infrastructure.
