Tampa International Airport (TPA) was provided with $7 million in the fiscal year 2020 Homeland Security Appropriations bill, which advanced through the U.S. House Appropriations Committee last week.
The Transportation Security Administration has provided $20 million to airports as reimbursements for security upgrades made following the 9/11 attacks, but this is the first time reimbursement has been included in the House Homeland Security Appropriations bill.
“The award-winning Tampa International welcomes over 58,000 daily visitors while maintaining its prestigious reputation of safety, convenience, and reliability,” Rep. Charlie Crist (D-St. Petersburg) said. “After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Tampa International took initiative, putting passenger safety first – to the tune of millions in security upgrades – including cutting edge explosive detection technology. Through my new role on the Appropriations Committee, I am proud to have helped secure this long overdue reimbursement for TPA.”
TPA installed a fully integrated explosive detection screening system in 2004.
The bill now heads to the full House floor for further consideration.
TPA also recently installed Transportation Security Administration computed tomography scanners. The scanners have advanced imaging technology, and this means travelers can leave electronics inside their carry-on bags.
TSA is one of two airports in Florida, along with Miami International Airport, to install the scanners.
