The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) began tearing down its Terminal 3 this week as the official beginning of construction for the $1.86 billion Delta Sky Way project, which aims to modernize and upgrade the facility’s Delta terminals.
Terminal 2 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal will also eventually benefit from this construction. Check-in, baggage claim, and terminal 3’s security screening checkpoint are among those down while demolition is in progress. That progress is expected to conclude in July, followed by facility excavation. In the meantime, the Terminal 3 security screening checkpoint has been relocated, and temporary bus gates have been set up.
“LAWA (Los Angeles World Airports) is excited to partner with Delta Air Lines to build world-class facilities that will enrich the experience for all who visit LAX,” Justin Erbacci, LAWA Chief Innovation & Technology Officer, said. “By integrating new technologies and the best of passenger amenities, we can create an exceptional guest experience that is safe, efficient and enjoyable.”
Those new technologies will include automated security lanes, additional gate area seating and updated concession program. Much of the project is expected to complete by the end of 2021, though the full scope will likely take until the end of 2023.
This effort is part of a larger investment from Delta, which has seen more than $7 billion invested in various airport projects since 2006.
