The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the airport’s Automated People Mover train.

The train will move passengers to airport terminals. The project also includes new passenger pick-up and drop-off locations outside the Central Terminal Area.

Once the project is completed in 2023, the people mover will connect to LA Metro’s light rail system. It is forecasted to transport 30 million travelers annually.

The ceremony was attended by Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles World Airports CEO Deborah Flint, Board of Airport Commissioners President Sean Burton, Supervisors Janice Hahn and Mark Ridley-Thomas, City Councilman Mike Bonin and community and labor leaders.

“Everyone traveling to or from LAX should have access to modern, reliable public transportation that gets them to their destination on time,” Garcetti said. “The Automated People Mover is a historic investment in our city’s transportation infrastructure — a milestone that will create middle-class jobs, reduce traffic congestion, and deliver a world-class experience for travelers.”

Garcetti has made more than $14 billion in infrastructure investments at LAX since taking office in 2009.

The train project is part of the Landside Access Modernization Program. Other aspects of the project include roadway improvements and a Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility.
