The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is busy preparing for a year-long construction project on Interstate 440, which will be undertaken by Kiewit Infrastructure South Co.
Kiewit will be rubblizing deteriorated concrete and using the material in a new asphalt roadway. Along the way, they will also replace concrete pavement, widen the roadway itself, remove the median, and work to alleviate congestion overall. Since November, the contractor has already been putting up noise walls and ramp queues.
Operations will gradually spread west along the interstate, beginning past I-65, then to I-40, then from I-65 to I-24. Proper construction is set to begin March 1, with traffic shifts starting 24-hour operations, six to seven days a week, with heavy nighttime work.
Kiewit bid for and won the project back in August 2018, for a sum of $152.9 million. Work is expected to complete sometime in August 2020.
